Pedro Rocha
Portugal
Co-founder of O quinto Elemento

Starting in 1976, I grew up freely between the beaches and fields on the outskirts of Porto,
immersed in nature and the rural stories of my grandparents and great-grandparents.

Walking barefoot through vineyards and cornfields, I connected deeply with the land and its cycles. As time passed, I transitioned from a rural upbringing to urban life, studying Environmental Sciences in the UK and Poland, and gaining professional experience in Germany and Cape Verde.

This journey has built the bridge between urban and rural worlds.

Returning to Portugal, I felt compelled to promote change, combining my rural heritage with a global perspective. In 2006, I launched “Raízes,” my first project in organic farming, pioneering the “Community Supported Agriculture” model in Portugal. Later, at Noocity,

I focused on community urban gardens, demonstrating that positive environmental and social impact is possible.

Passionate about the intersection of urban-rural relations and sustainable development, I
continue to explore and question, guided by the humility of what I don’t know. The question that drives me now is: What is the ecological function of the Homo sapiens species?
